A Little Off Topic...Retro TV

The Retro TV Network can now be seen online, which is why this is a little off topic. It's not coming to a TV near us. It's available over the air in other parts of the country but not in Dayton or Cincinnati.

Retro website @ Retro TV Network.

It's a really bland website but their TV channel is fun to watch. They just need to work on syncing the sound with the picture.

Storm Wrecks Reception

Yesterday's big storm (6-10-2020) has apparently knocked some local TV stations off the air. WDTN 2, WBDT 26, and PBS channel 14 are all down for the time.

Update:

They're back!

Cincinnati: Justice Network now on WXIX 19.6

The Justice Network has been added to Cincinnati's channel 19.6. It's been a few years since the Justice TV network vanished from Dayton's channel WDTN 2.3 so if you can get channel 19 out of Cincinnati, the Justice TV Network is back.

Latest on WRGT 45 & WKEF 22

Update: 1-28-2020

Re-scan time again for channels 22 and 45...and they may come in now.

From the Dayton 24/7 Now Facebook page, "MONDAY (1-27-2020) UPDATE: The auxiliary transmitter is up and running. After re-scanning your channels, many viewers should have improved reception. If you still aren't receiving both ABC 22 and FOX 45 it's likely because work on a permanent transmitter is ongoing. We appreciate your patience".

Update: 12-23-2019

Thanks goes out to DaytonSeth for this recent news on WRGT & WKEF...

WRGT/WKEF Update

According to a recent update, it might be mid to late December before they return to full power.

Click the link below for the latest news on the tower repairs and check out the video on the page. It shows some workers up on the tower. Yikes!

Weird?
Yes.

But what the heck...

WHIO IS BACK!

On channel 7 no less. This includes MeTV on 7.2 and Laff TV on 7.3. They're main channel is still on PBS 16.2 too.

Not sure if they're done with the tower work because if they're not, expect them to go off the air again during daylight hours while the workers on the tower finish up with the repairs.

WHIO TV Now On 16.2

Happened sometime today but the audio's weird. You can hear sound effects and the musical score from the show but you can't hear anything being said.

UPDATE:  Since WHIO is back on their regular channel they are no longer on 16.2.

WHIO TV May Return Soon, But...

If they do, WHIO will temporally air on WPTD 16.2, until repairs are made to their transmitter, which are now expected to take four to six weeks to complete. It's up to the FCC rather or not to allow the temporary move and if it is OKed by them, it will only be WHIO channel 7 on 16.2 but neither of their subchannels, MeTV or Laff TV will be airing.

WDTN 2 Moves & Other News

WDTN channel 2 has moved from real channel 50 to real channel 31 so you may have to do another rescan. It was a bit of a pain here since the Hauppauge TV tuner connected to the computer wouldn't let me watch the station until all of WDTN and it's subs were deleted on real channel 50.

So I had to delete...
WDTN 2.1
Escape 2.2
WBDT 26.1
Bounce 26.2
Ion 43.1

And yes, WBDT and Ion are subchannels of WDTN.

Other news...

WHIO 7 hopes to be back on the air sometime today. (As we know now that didn't happen).

WKEF 22 & WRGT  45 have begun tower work and say they will be back to full power "in the coming weeks." Here's the link

WHIO channel 7 down for now

According to their website WHIO channel 7 is having "technical difficulties" which will be effecting most over the air viewers and possibly certain pay TV providers too. They're not saying what the problem is (we live less than three miles from the WHIO's transmitting tower and are having reception problems with them too) but their website says,

"If you watch WHIO-TV Channel 7 with an over the air antenna, please understand that we’re experiencing technical difficulties affecting our signal. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Viewers on Direct TV and Dish Network also may be affected.
A team of engineers are at the transmitter location working on the issue and we hope to have this fixed as soon as possible".

Missing Channels after Re-Scan

Click here for the main page

Apparently it's a problem with many TV stations across the nation. From what I've read today some TV channels are using temporary low powered equipment until the full powered versions are installed. WKEF 22 and WRGT 45 are two such channels in the Dayton market that folks are having trouble with but give them time and I'm sure everything will be back up and running very soon.

Re-scan time is tomorrow

Remember, tomorrow (10/18/2019)  you may need to re-scan your TV's and or converter box to continue watching television.

Rescan Time Almost Here

As reported here several months ago, more TV spectrum has been sold and stations all over the country will have to move to other frequencies, "on the dial," as they use to say. Most TV channels will be moving on Friday 10/18/2019, but apparently not of them will.

I don't see any problem with channel 2 not moving on the 18th since their current location in the TV spectrum (real channel 50) won't effect any other channels, but what could be a problem is low power WLWD channel 20. WLWD broadcast religious programming and they are suppose to move to a new frequency at some point in time. The problem with this is WLWT channel 5 in Cincinnati will be moving to real channel 20 on the 18, so if WLWD  still occupies real channel 20 after the 18th, a lot of folks around Dayton/Kettering area won't be able to pick up WLWT since WLWD's signal will block it. The again, WLWT normally has a pretty darn strong signal around here so maybe it'll be WLWD that gets their signal knocked of the air.

Escape TV is now Court TV Mystery

Thanks to The Blue Light Buzz for reporting on this...

Escape TV (WDTN 2.2 & WCPO 9.4) got themselves a makeover and are now called Court TV Mystery. While I'm not familiar with Escapes past lineups of shows, it does sound like Court TV Mystery is a totally different network with totally different shows.

WRGT 45.2 Drops ThisTV

Thanks to air tv for reporting on this...

On 10/8/2019 WRGT channel 45.2 dropped the ThisTV network in favor of a new CBS Network called Dabl TV. Dabl officially launched on 10/9/2019 but debuted on WRGT 10/8. From what little I've watched of it, let me say (with tongue planted firmly in cheek), Welcome back, Live Well Network.

Here's the Dabl Networks website link

The Day Analog TV Died

This one's from the evening of June 12, 2009, the day most analog TV stations shut down. I managed to record two Dayton TV stations ending their analog TV transmissions with the first being WHIO channel 7 and then WKEF channel 22.

WKEF ends their analog signal with an old video of the National Anthem, just like how TV stations would go off the air back in the day before 24 hour a day broadcasting was the norm.
WHIO does a count down to end their analog broadcast but it doesn't go as planned and hilarity ensues. OK, not really hilarity but it's still kind of funny, especially when someone in the control room says, "That was kind of anticlimactic, wasn't it."

Looking Back: Bob Shreve

Kind of off topic for this blog but it's been a slow year for over the air TV news in the Dayton/Cincinnati markets so I thought it would be fun to look back at a famous local TV talent that once graced our TV screens, Bob Shreve.

Bob Shreve was a godsend for those of us that liked to stay up late on the weekend nights since he would appear on Friday nights in Dayton on channel 7 (I think) and Saturday nights on WCPO 9 in Cincinnati. Understand, back in the day TV channels didn't stay on the air all night. After 12:00 or 1:00 AM the channels would go dark until sometime in the morning. Times were tough back in those days when TV channels didn't broadcast 24/7. :)

Bob Shreve's show would give us three movies to watch overnight on the weekends with Bob making appearances during the commercial breaks of those shows. He was a very funny and talented host and the sponsor of his show was Schoenling beer, which in a weird way was really appealing to us kids that couldn't legally buy beer yet.

Bob was the Man!

Here's an 8 plus minute clip from Bob's all night movies.

Dayton/Cincinnati PBS Channels Off The Air

Update:

All PBS ThinkTV channels are now back on the air. They were off the air from 7/5/19 to 7/9/19.  Seems longer, doesn't it?

(Original post below)

PBS channels 14, 16, & 48 are currently off the air.

Here's an update from ThinkTV's website, posted 7-8-2019...

"Our stations are off the air due to equipment failure in master control. The replacement part has ordered and should arrive Tuesday. We are working to be back on the air as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience".
