WBDT & WKOI Closing Down

The local CW affiliate WBDT channel 26 and the Trinity Broadcast Network WKOI channel 43 will be closing down operations in the near future, exactly when isn't known but it could be anytime now. WBDT airs the CW Network on it's main channel and Bounce TV on 26.2 and Ion on 26.3 so those will be gone too. WKOI has five channels of religious programming, all of which will disappear when WKOI shuts down.

The reason is there was another spectrum auction and TV channels 38-51 were sold to wireless carriers. What that means is all TV stations across the nation that use any of those channels must move to a lower channel number or close down. Dayton has three channels which currently  use the sold spectrum, those are WKOI 43 (real channel 39), WHIO 7 (real channel 41) and WDTN 2 (real channel 50.) WHIO and WDTN chose to move to a lower channel whereas WKOI chose to take the money and run ($20,037,695.) WBDT 26, which airs on real channel 26 would have had to move too since the FCC will be moving all channels in Dayton as well as most TV markets to prevent channel interference from other markets. WBDT 26 will receive a payout of over $27,000,000.

Here a couple of list showing the new channel number for each station in Dayton and Cincinnati...

    1. Elliott Block, owner of WOTH & WBQC (WKRP channel 25 in Cincinnati) said that WBQC will probably be going off the air too since it would cost him $100,000 to move the channel to another frequency.

    2. Dang I'll miss those 2 networks if they go.
I've changed antennas 5 times so I can get them.

  2. I'm hopeful these lost channels might find a new home on another station for the Dayton market. I can still get The CW and Bounce from Cincinnati stations but ION was a great addition for Dayton and I'm hopeful they can still find a way to be a part of the Dayton OTA lineup. Since The CW is on (and will continue to be on) VHF channel 12 in Cincinnati it will mean not many viewers in Dayton will be able to receive it. Most newer antennas are designed primarily for UHF and it takes a large antenna with VHF elements to get channel 12 reliably here (in particular the north parts of Dayton).

I'm pretty disappointed with the whole repacking situation and loss of another significant chunk of the OTA spectrum. Yes I know the argument that OTA is a dying breed, but honestly its promise has improved greatly in recent years and many people are just now rediscovering it. I hope this is the last of the spectrum grabs.

    1. I agree totally and those that claim OTA television is dying are in denial. There was a study done last year that found OTA TV only households have grown to 17% since the digital transition in 2009.
